Arsenic intoxication as a cause of megaloblastic anemia.
We have described a case of chronic arsenic intoxication associated with pancytopenia and megaloblastic erythropoiesis. The patient had the typical laboratory manifestations of effective erythorpoiesis due to a megaloblastic process, including macroovalocytes, mild pancytopenia, low reticulocyte index, increased marrow cellularity with erythroid hyperplasia, and morphologic evidence of megalobl...
متن کاملHomocystinuria: a rare cause of megaloblastic anemia.
We present an eight-year-old boy who initially presented to us with megaloblastic anemia and subsequently developed dislocation of lens. The child had a positive sodium nitroprusside test and homocystinuria. He was diagnosed to have homocystinuria type 1. His anemia improved on oral pyridoxine and folic acid therapy. Homocystinuria should be remembered as a cause of megaloblastic anemia.
متن کاملMegaloblastic, dyserythropoietic anemia following arsenic ingestion.
Following acute arsenic ingestion, a 35 year old woman experienced multiple organ failure, including renal and respiratory insufficiency, toxic hepatitis, peripheral neuropathy, and encephalopathy. In addition, she developed an anemia; the bone marrow showed a striking dyserythropoiesis with megaloblastic features. Her recovery was heralded by normalization of the bone marrow morphology, follow...
متن کاملMegaloblastic anemia of pregnancy: characteristics of pure megaloblastic anemia and megaloblastic anemia associated with iron deficiency.
LTHOUGH megaboblastic anemia of pregnancy is considered mainly as a folic acid deficiency anemia, since this vitamin induces remission in most cases, its mechanism of production is still obscure. Dietary deficiency has been claimed to be the principal cause. However, this anemia has been observed in well-to-do women whose diet was satisfactory. Some other factors such as gastrointestinal upset,...
متن کاملHemolytic Anemia as a Sequela of Arsenic Intoxication Following Long-Term Ingestion of Traditional Chinese Medicine
We report on a 51-yr-old woman who developed intravascular hemolytic anemia caused by arsenic after long-term ingestion of a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Twelve years before the admission, she was diagnosed as neurocysticercosis. She has ingested a TCM for about 12 yr instead of undergoing medical therapy for the disease. She was presented with a severe Coombs'-negative hemolytic anemia ...
